Your snagging list, room by room
Snagging means checking your new build, extension or renovation for small defects and unfinished work before you sign it off. A snag is anything that isn't quite right, like a sticking door, patchy paint or a dripping tap. Go through this list calmly, note each snag with a photo, and share it with your builder so it can be put right.

- Floors are level, with no squeaks, gaps, lifting or damaged boards
- Tiles are level, evenly spaced, fully grouted and not cracked
Doors & windows

- Gaps around doors are even, and handles and locks work properly
- Windows open, close and lock, and every key is handed over
- Glass is free of scratches, and seals and trickle vents are intact
- Sills and frames are sealed neatly inside and out

- Paths, patios and drives are level and drain away from the house
- Fences, gates and outside lights are finished and working
Tips for a smooth snagging visit
- Visit in daylight and take a torch, a phone charger and some masking tape to mark snags.
- Photograph each snag and note the room and what needs doing.
- Send your list to your builder in writing and agree a date for the fixes.
- Check each item again once it's been fixed before you tick it off.
